Cinquain A cinquain is a style of poem that follows these rules - Line 1 - One word (a noun) naming the subject of the verse. Line 2 - Two words (adjectives) describing the subject. Line 3 - Three words (verbs) describing the subject's actions. Line 4 - Four words giving the writer's opinion of the subject. Line 5 - One word (noun) giving another name for the subject.

Example of Cinquain The Cinquain by Beverley George Written by C.Alfonzetti Violin Brown, shapely Singing, shrieking, sobbing A moody music maker Fiddle

Concrete Poem This poem is otherwise known as the shape poem. This poem style asks the writer to choose a subject or theme and use the word in the poem to create the shape of the subject or theme.

Concrete Poem Example

Diamante This style of poem starts with a certain theme and ends the opposite of the theme. The structure is Line 1 - Name (Noun) Theme/Object Line 2 - Two adjectives describing the noun in line 1. Line 3 - Three participles (-ing or -ed), relating to line 1 and 2 of the poem. Line 4 - Four nouns (2 referring to the noun in line 1 and the other 2 referring to line 7). Line 5 - Three participles (relating to noun in line 7) Line 6 - Two adjectives (describing the noun in line 7) Line 7 - Noun (names the Theme or object which is the opposite of the noun in line 1.

Diamante Example

Haiku A haiku is typically a three lined poem. It includes 5 syllables in the first line, seven in the second, and 5 in the third.

Example of a Haiku Today is Tuesday I cannot wait til Friday It is Homecoming

Acrostic Poetry Acrostic poetry allows the author to take a subject and each line of the poem is a letter in the subject

Example of Acrostic Poetry Everyday we use this language. Not always do people use it correctly. Going to class may help with this task. Listening allows better understanding of the subject. Interest in the subject helps too. Staying quiet during class may help as well. Helping each other may work, but not when you copy.

Question Poetry Question poetry is a style of poetry that asks questions about the subject through poetry. Typically the questions are on 4 line with the AABB format.

Example of Question Poetry What day is today? Is Friday on the way? Did you sleep well last night? Or for sleep, did you fight?

Shakespearian Sonnet A Shakespearian sonnet is composed in 14 lines in an iambic pentameter - abab cdcd efef gg

Sonnet Example That you were once unkind befriends me now, And for that sorrow, which I then did feel, Needs must I under my transgression bow, Unless my nerves were brass or hammered steel. For if you were by my unkindness shaken As I by yours, y'have passed a hell of time, And I a tyrant have no leisure taken To weigh how once I suffered in your crime. O that our night of woe might have remembered My deepest sense, how hard true sorrow hits, And soon to you, as you to me then tendered The humble salve, which wounded bosoms fits! But that your trespass now becomes a fee, Mine ransoms yours, and yours must ransom me.

Free Verse Free verse has no set structure; it follows no rhyming scheme. Free verse allows for the author to write creatively.

Free Verse Example As the light of day dwindles down, I feel myself drifting to sleep, slipping into a gentle lull. Dream I do not remember, Has rest even come? I awake the next morning thinking, Did I get any sleep?
