 The Second Session of the Global Platform on DRR, held in Geneva last June 2009, proposed that by 2011 national assessments of the safety of existing education and health facilities should be undertaken, and that by 2015 concrete action plans for safer schools and hospitals should be developed and implemented in all disaster prone countries.  Similarly, disaster risk reduction should be included in all school curricula by the same year. These targets have emerged out of the World Disaster Reduction Campaign on Hospital Safe from Disasters.  The campaign thus builds on the Global Platform Outcomes and also upon the Kuala Lumpur Action Plan, which was requested by Ministers at the 3rd Asian Ministerial Conference on DRR. WHY a million safe schools – hospitals campaign

The Pledging Campaign is….  simple  Involve individuals, groups or institutions  Be unified for both schools and hospitals  Raise public awareness and create a demand for safe schools and hospitals  Encourage local/national governments to take measures;

I PLEDGE … To make people aware about safe schools and hospitals To be prepared in case of emergencies and disasters To contribute time, effort or resources to make schools and hospitals safer   

Pledgers  Become volunteers for the advocacy for safe schools and hospitals  Become safety and disaster preparedness leaders or actors  Become disaster risk reduction supporters or contributors

The Pledge has 3 components   Public Awareness   Emergency and Disaster Preparedness   Disaster Risk Reduction

Who can pledge  Individual – student, parent, teacher, patient, doctor, nurse, etc  Community, Organizations, Institutions  Local and National Government  Business groups and corporations  Donors

What can you do- As a pledger ?  By displaying a poster on safe schools or hospitals in bulletin boards of classrooms, offices, etc.  By conducting seminars and lectures in schools & hospitals.  By organizing and participating in emergency drills in schools or hospitals.  By organizing a safety and disaster management committee.  By conducting multi-hazard inspection of schools and hospitals

Several Project Submissions by Partners to 7 th DIPECHO Call for proposal for SEA For example: UNISDR, ASEAN, EMI and ASEP to focus on Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, and Viet Nam; Duration: 1 June 2010 (15 Months) Expected outcomes :  The Philippines - development of guidelines for school safety inspection, capacity building, pilot inspection of selected schools.  Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, and Viet Nam - advocacy and capacity building on school safety inspection.  Regional – development and translation of advocacy materials, dissemination and development of capacity building programme for school inspection.
