Rotarians Against Malaria - Solomon Islands

In Western and Choiseul Provinces before RAM MALARIA INCIDENT RATE 300+ PER 1000 WHO target 80 per 1000 WHO target 80 per per 1000 For the past two years the incident rate in both Provinces has remained below 60 per per 1000 With some areas as low as 20 per 1000

GUADALCANAL PROVINCE In per 1000 MALARIA INCIDENCE RATE 399 per 1000 Health services restored and some bednets distributed In 2005 MALARIA INCIDENCE RATE 311 Per 1000

23000 In May 2006 RAM supplied bednets These have been distributed to rural communities across Guadalcanal.

Stats to the end of December per 1000 Annual Incident Rate of 188 per 1000 A dramatic reduction after a short time.

This Rotary assistance is likely to be required for many years. Funds for the purchase of bednets, insecticides and other consumables are being provided by AusAID and The Global Fund. AusAID will continue to provide funds for infrastructure with Rotary providing the logistic and manpower support to ensure the success of this vital part of the elimination of malaria in the Solomon Islands. Without Rotary volunteers it is unlikely that the building of houses and storage facilities could be achieved within a timeframe to allow the elimination program to be successful.
