Reflexology “Reflexology is the application of pressure to areas on the feet, hands and ears” (“What is,” 1998)  “ The theory behind reflexology is that these areas correspond to organs and systems of the body” (“What is,” 1998).  “Several studies funded by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health indicate that reflexology may reduce pain and psychological symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, and enhance relaxation and sleep” (“What is,” 1998).  “ Reflexologists claim that reflexology also can treat a wide variety of medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes and cancer. However, scientific evidence is lacking to support these claim” (“What is,” 1998).

General Information about Reflexology  “HOW DOES IT WORK? the most commonly held belief is that Reflexology acts to relax those reflexes that in turn are connected to various parts of the body, improving lymphatic drainage and circulation as well as relaxing muscles and stimulating nerve connections” (“Lighthouse Wellness,” 2014).  “DOES REFLEXOLOGY CURE DISEASES OR AILMENTS? is not intended to cure diseases or ailments. Indicating areas where higher stress or tension is present in the body and can assist to relieve that stress or tension which can promote or encourage the natural healing process” (“Lighthouse Wellness,” 2014).  “WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF REFLEXOLOGY? benefits patients health in both chronic and other ailments, it is not a substitute for medical treatment, and should be considered as complementary to any type of medical treatment. primarily eases stress and tension, which in turn can improve blood circulation, lymph drainage, assist in the elimination of toxins, and strengthening of the immune system” (“Lighthouse Wellness,” 2014).

More general information  “CAN REFLEXOLOGY MAKE A CONDITION WORSE? No, on rare occasions, release of toxins as a result of the body's natural healing process may result in symptoms such as perspiration, nausea or headaches, however these symptoms are not directly related to Reflexology, and are temporary and not serious” (“Lighthouse Wellness,” 2014).  “Foot reflexology- is a simple, non-invasive method to help balance the body” (“Lighthouse Wellness,” 2014).  “Hand reflexology- is an holistic and natural form of massage therapy, that can target your key body zones from the palm of your hand. Specific zones, pressure points, and energy centers located on the palm and backs of your hands; when these areas are massaged appropriately, different organs and functions of the body are affected” (“Lighthouse Wellness,” 2014).

Hand Reflexology  10 Step Hand Reflexology Self Treatment 1. “Begin your relaxing ten minute hand reflexology treatment by pinching the tips of each finger and thumb of your right hand. Reverse and repeat this process on your left hand. The pressure applied to your fingers should be firm, but not painful. A few seconds for each finger tip will do” (“Ten Steps to,” 2014). 2. “After pinching the tops and bottoms of your finger and thumb tips go back to each tip and pinch them again, this time squeezing from side to side. Again, apply pressure, a little discomfort is okay. But, it is important not to inflict pain on yourself” (“Ten Steps to,” 2014). 3. “Combine steps 3 and 4 rubbing the tops and bottoms (above photo) and also rubbing the sides (step 4 photo) of each finger and thumb. Continued 6. “Using your thumb and forefinger firmly grasp the webbed area between your thumb and and forefinger of your other hand. Keeping a firm hold, tug at the skin gently until the fleshy web snaps away from your grasp. Repeat this process for the webbed-tween areas on all your fingers” (“Ten Steps to,” 2014). 7. “Rest the palm of your hand inside the palm of your free hand. Use your thumb to massage the back of your hand. Leisurely manipulate the knuckles and in between knuckle area first. Continue thumb massaging each area on the back of the hand” (“Ten Steps to,” 2014). 8. “Gently cradle your wrist inside your free hand. Use your thumb to massage your inner wrist. This is an especially soothing massage for anyone who routinely uses their wrists in repetitive movements (i.e. computer mousing)” (“Ten Steps to,” 2014). 9. “Massage the palm of your hand with your thumb. Alternately you can use your knuckle to massage the fleshier mound areas more deeply” (“Ten Steps to,” 2014). 10. “At the end of your session press your thumb deeply in the center of your palm. Take a few cleansing breaths and center your being. This is a opportune moment to relax, clear your mind, and focus on your healing intentions” (“Ten Steps to,” 2014). 6 Steps on how to read a foot reflexology chart 1. “Refer to reiterative foot charts when you are getting ready to give yourself reflexology. Reiterative foot reflexology charts mirror your body's image. These charts are based on zones to reflect your body in miniature on your feet” (“How to Read,” 2014). 2. “Know the difference between a Chinese foot chart and a reiterative foot chart. Chinese foot charts are based on acupuncture meridians. Chinese charts reflect places in your foot that correspond with other parts of your body, but not in a reiterative pattern” (“How to Read,” 2014). 3. “Remember that foot reflexology maps or charts have multiple views for the top of the foot and the sole, as well as both sides. It's possible to get confused when you look at charts and to mix up the top and bottom foot reflexology maps” (“How to Read,” 2014).

Continued 4. “Keep in mind that the reflex points on the left foot correspond to the left side of the body, and the reflex points on the right foot correspond to the right side of your body. In most cases, organs and other body parts are shown on both the right and left foot charts” (“How to Read,” 2014). 5. “Don’t forget to look for the spinal reflex points that are located on the inner sides of your foot. The reflex points shown on the outer side of your foot correspond to the outer sides of your body” (“How to Read,” 2014). 6. “Administer reflexology to correspond to broader areas of the body if you have a simple foot reflexology map that doesn’t show all the zones and meridians in your feet” (“How to Read,” 2014). How to read an Ear reflexology Chart 1. “Get an ear reflexology chart online or refer to one in a book” (“How to Read,” 2014). 2. “Take a few moments to study the chart. You will see a logical pattern of reflex points located on the different sections of the ear. The reflexology points are located on the outer ear and the outer ear canal area, as well as on the ear lobe. The reflex points for your organs are located on the inner area of the ear canal” (“How to Read,” 2014). 3. “Look at the chart to see which areas of your ear to press or massage that coincide with areas of your body in which you are experiencing difficulty. If you have discomfort or pain in your shoulder, for example, you would press an area on your outer ear. The chart indicates that that reflex spot is just about directly across from your ear canal” (“How to Read,” 2014).

Continued Read an emotional ear reflexology chart 1. “Look for emotional ear reflex points on a regular physical ear chart. Sometimes both aspects are combined on one chart” (“How to Read,” 2014). 2. “Determine which emotions you are interested in working with.
