Project Based Learning Protect the Environment and Live Well Denise Tallakson June 2014

What is Project Based Learning?  Project-based learning is a dynamic approach to teaching in which students explore real-world problems and challenges. With this type of active and engaged learning, students are inspired to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they're studying.

What does it look like?  students learning knowledge to tackle realistic problems as they would be solved in the real world  increased student control over his or her learning  teachers serving as coaches and facilitators of inquiry and reflection  students (usually, but not always) working in pairs or groups

Example of PBL ecology-technology-video

Turn and Talk  What types of Project Based Learning have you tried?  What ideas do you have that might tie project based learning into your mini-unit for this class?  What other information do you need to help you implement a project in your classroom?

Tips for Successful Projects  Begin with the End in Mind  Make a Tough Topic Fun  Focus on Standards- but not too many  Start Small When You Are New  Test Drive the Final Product Before Starting the Project  Start your Project with an “Entry Event”  Keep Students in the Loop  Set Clear Deadlines but allow for some Flexibility  Create a Balanced Assessment Plan  Conclude Projects with a Bang! ( real world connection) lessons

 The Best Project Based Learning comes from the students!!! Find out what your students are passionate about and build a project around that topic.
