TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

Your project focus You need to select the Design and Technology area you are currently studying. Eg. Textiles, Graphics etc. If you have 2 teachers in Design and Technology at the moment, then you can choose either area to do for this project. Lucky you! This project focuses on the different types of equipment and tools that are used in your area of D & T. You may have used some equipment already.

Task 1 - Naming Equipment It is very important that you know the names of the different types of equipment/tools used in D & T and what they are used for. Some students forget the specific names of the equipment or don’t remember what they are used for. For example, do you know how many different types of scissors there are?

Different types of scissors Paper scissors Embroidery scissors Trimming scissors Dressmaking shears Pinking shears The list is endless!!!!

Each type of scissors have a specific name and function/job. Choose the wrong equipment and you may not get the best results. Therefore, you must know the correct name of the equipment and learn what they are used for!

Let’s try another piece of equipment How many types of pins can you name?

ANSWERS! Safety pins Drawing pins Dressmaking pins Split pins Cotter pins Nappy pins Rolling pins Can you think of any more?

Task 2: Researching for information It is important that you think about where to look for information about tools and equipment for your project before you start your work. There are lots of different places you can look. Don’t just rely on the internet. Can you make any other suggestions?

Task 2: Researching for information-Where to start How much do you know already? Begin by looking around your D & T room. What equipment can you see? What equipment have you used already? What was it used for? How is the equipment stored?

Task 3: Planning & Making Planning your work is a very important stage so you know exactly what you are doing. You will need to think about what you want to include in your work. Your final piece of work should be neat and contain all the information required. Correct spellings are important too! If you skip the planning section, you could end up spending more time on your work because you have made a mistake or missed something out.

Task 3: Planning & Making Depending upon which project booklet you have been given, your final piece of work may be presented as: * a pack of information cards (ILA2b) * a poster (ILA2a) or * you have been asked to produce a more interesting way of displaying the different types of D & T equipment and tools (ILA2c) On the next couple of slides, there are two examples of creative ideas for this project work……..

ILA 2c Creative ideas from past students

Aim high, push yourself, be creative and do your best!

Resources Your teacher will provide you with some paper if you need some. What else will you need to complete your work?
