What is Metadata? 3
Metadata – Data With a Purpose What is Metadata? – Data about data – Descriptive information that characterizes a set of quantitative and/or qualitative measurements and distinguishes that set from other similar measurement sets. - (L. Olsen) 4
GCMD Introduction 5
Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Mission Assist the scientific community in the discovery of Earth science data, related services, and ancillary information, which includes descriptions of platforms and instruments. Our responsibility is to provide discovery-level metadata of Earth science resources and provide scientists a comprehensive and high quality database to reduce overall expenditures for scientific data collection and dissemination. 6
Discovery Level Metadata 7 The GCMD hosts discovery level metadata describing data set collections and subsets through the CEOS IDN Directory Interchange Format (DIF). Information (keywords) that can be used to identify and locate the data that meet the user's requirements (via a Web browser, a Web based catalogue, etc). - British Atmospheric Data Centre

docBUILDER Metadata Authoring Tool 29
docBUILDER Online metadata authoring tool for describing data, services, and/or climate diagnostics. – Provides a “visual” check-list of required, highly recommended, and recommended fields to populate. – Offers a secure system for your metadata management needs. A user account is required to access docBUILDER. 30
Benefits of Using docBUILDER Offers validation (checks controlled fields and syntax). Encourages authors to maintain accuracy of metadata with regular updates. Promotes data, service, and/or climate diagnostic globally. Facilitates contribution to the ESIP portals – available directly from the ESIP portal page. 31
Access docBUILDER 32 User Registration – A single account serves GCMD, ECHO, LANCE, and the DAAC’s. docBUILDER – Metadata Authoring Tool
