The CVCS ASCE Committee on Volunteer Community Service Runs Community Service Events at ASCE National Conferences (next year in KC!) Selects Award Winners for Outstanding Public Service by Section or Individuals Promotes and Encourages Members to reach out to their Communities

Helping the Underprivileged Food, Toy or Clothing Drives Fundraising or “Bell-ringing” Help in Senior Centers, Hospices or Food Pantries “Adopt-a-YMCA” or similar program Engineers Without Borders or similar work

Community Improvements Construction / Rehab Projects Your Own, Habitat for Humanity, Rebuilding Together, etc… Skateboard Parks, Playgrounds, Small Bridges Clean-Ups, Community Gardens, or “Adopt-A- Stream” or “Adopt-a-Highway” programs “Do Not Dump” Stencilling Work with Scouts

Steps towards a Successful Public Service Event Consider working with a charitable organization needing help. Form a Committee and Allow around 5 months Plan activities with realistic numbers for volunteers and achievable scopes Fundraise, seek sponsors or buy supplies Start seeking volunteers early.

Rewards for Outstanding Community Service Group Unity and Confidence ASCE Awards given yearly include Public Service Awards to Groups or Sections and Citizen Awards to Individuals. Dozens of Other ASCE related Awards can involve community service (Diversity Champion, “Young Faces”, Edmund Freeman, etc.) Pre-College Outreach Committee will be raffling off laptops to those reporting their activities.
