NACE International MISSION: Protecting People, Assets, and the Environment from the Effects of Corrosion Integrated Approaches to Corrosion Problems The resources for information and intelligence on all corrosion control technologies, many used together:  Coatings solutions  Cathodic protection  Chemical inhibition  Materials selection  Best practices  Research

IMO Activities Environmental Scan by NACE International November 2006  NACE met with IHI, JSTRA, SAJ, HHI, CSSC March 2007  NACE hosted 1st Marine Coatings Summit in Nashville, Tennessee, U.S. May 2007  NACE met with Lloyd’s Register, DNV, FROSIO, Intertanko, IACS, RINA, and CESA

IMO Activities Environmental Scan by NACE International Standards Training & Certification Networks

Results of IMO Environmental Scan NACE to develop industry standards in several areas, including:  Dust levels  Salt content  Application (nearing publication)  Auditing coating technical files  Procedures for measurement readings Standards

Results of IMO Environmental Scan New NACE Technical Exchange Group: TEG 385  Advise on development of technical standards  Oversee exchange of information on best practices  Develop process guidelines for testing institutes for materials testing Standards

Results of IMO Environmental Scan Training under development in several areas, including:  Training/certification on Shipboard Corrosion Assessment Technology (completed)  1-day training on use of coating inspection instruments for technical AND non-technical personnel  Training/certification on use of coatings in conjunction with cathodic protection on ships  Failure analysis  Training on corrosion prevention, coatings, and cathodic protection technologies  3-level training/certification for coating applicators Training & Certification

Results of IMO Environmental Scan Resolution MSC.215(82) Performance Standard for Protective Coatings for Dedicated Seawater Ballast Tanks in All Types of Ships and Double-Side Skin Spaces of Bulk Carriers Coating Inspection Annex 1, Section “…To ensure compliance with this Standard, the following shall be carried out by qualified coating inspectors certified to NACE Coating Inspector Level 2, FROSIO Inspector Level III, or equivalent as verified by the Administration.”

Results of IMO Environmental Scan What is the NACE Coating Inspector Program (CIP)?  Level 1: One-week training course on basics of coating inspection emphasizing hands-on training, instruments, responsibilities, basic equipment, and technologies with hands-on and written examinations  Level 2: Advanced one-week training course emphasizing specialty technologies—including marine—with written examinations  Level 3: Oral examination to test knowledge across many industries and technologies Coating Inspection

Results of IMO Environmental Scan Revisions requested to CIP during IMO scan (revisions completed)  “Recognition” is now “certification” at all levels  Marine specialty component of both Level 1 and Level 2 has been enhanced further Coating Inspection

Results of IMO Environmental Scan Achievements  25th anniversary of CIP in 2008  CIP classes in 24 countries in year ending June 2007  Courses available in Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, English and blended learning format on DVD in Chinese and English  7,400 persons have taken at least CIP Level 1  Active certifications Level 1: 5,529 Level 2: 1,417 Level 3: 2,451 Coating Inspection

Results of IMO Environmental Scan Goal To raise the quality of industrial coatings work across all industries Coating Inspection

Results of IMO Environmental Scan IMO activities are expanding quickly and networks are needed  To foster exchange of technology  To foster accessibility to information/services/events that help meet required aspects of IMO standards, such as training or development of industry standards  To foster growth of a professional workforce to meet the requirements of IMO standards Networks
