Advisor: Professor Yiding Cao SENIOR Design Project Department of mechanical Engineering Florida international university A New Heat Engine and its Applications in Renewable Energy Bruno Barbosa Hector Cintron Glenn Drzewicki Advisor: Professor Yiding Cao

Problem Statement The main objectives is to design a new type of heat engine based from the current structure of an internal combustion. Various components for the new heat engine will be designed: valves for the heating chamber heating chamber shape and size compact heating elements various parts for timing management of the engine. The new heat engine will be tested for performance, in terms of power output and thermal efficiency.

Metrics Power output : 8- 15 kW (10 – 20 hp) Thermal Efficiency: 30-40% Compression Ratio: 6:1 The compression ratio will be decreased from 9.4:1 into the desired range of 5:1 to 6:1

Initial Design Concept

Proposed Design The production of the final heat engine will be on the foundation of a Wankel rotary engine. A Wankel rotary engine works on the same mechanical four stroke operation as a conventional piston engine.

Work Cycle of Heat Engine

Valve System

Heating Chamber- Initial Concept Initial Concept included small vortex generator to tumble airflow Heating chamber resembled a pipeline 2 heating chambers per rotor housing 2 pathways for valve shaft

Heat Chamber: Working Concept Chamber requirements: Mount to engine block Withstand high pressure & temperature Multi piece for maintenance Tumble / swirl airflow

Heat Chamber: Working Concept

Project and Division Tasks Bruno Barbosa: Report Development Piping, tubing, valves, etc. for system configuration Heat exchanger & heating chamber design and analysis Hector Cintron: Valve design Glenn Drzewicki: Fabrication/ manufacturing of engine components Gear/ valve timing management & design

Conclusion The main goal of this project includes creating a heat engine with no Carbon Dioxide emissions and to show its application in renewable energy The next IAB presentation in April will include: Analytical Analysis and Structural Design Major Components Structural Design Cost Analysis Prototype System Description Tests Results of Prototype
