New Testament Giving

Some portions of this study are adapted from an online resource from Milpitas Bible Fellowship

What is Stewardship?

Stewardship = managing something that we’ve been given

Does anything really belong to us?

Haggai 2:8

Everything that we have belongs to God

Matthew 6:19-21

What is Tithing?

What does tithe mean?

Tithe = tenth or 10%

They gave 10% for the Levites every year They gave 10% for the religious festivals every year They gave 10% for the needy every three years (3.3% per year) TOTAL = 23.3%

Is tithing talked about in the New Testament?

Matthew 23:23

Are we held to the Old Testament law?

Nowhere in the New Testament are we commanded to tithe

“Tithing today is sometimes presented as the equivalent of a Christian stock investment. Pay the tithe, and God will give you more money in return. Refuse to tithe, and God will punish you. Such thoughts rip at the heart of the good news of the gospel.” -Pagan Christianity pg. 180

Although the New Testament is silent about tithing, it is not silent about giving

What is the Purpose of Giving in the New Testament?

1. To meet the needs of the other believers (Acts 2:44-45; 1 John 3:17, Galatians 6:9-10)

2. To meet the needs of Christian workers (1 Timothy 5:17-18; 1 Corinthians 9:6-14; Philippians 4:15-18)

3. To meet the needs of the poor (Luke 12:33-34; Ephesians 4:28; James 1:27)

How Should we Give?

1. We should give without trying to impress (Matthew 6:1-4)

2. We should give voluntarily (2 Corinthians 8:3-4)

3. We should give expectantly (2 Corinthians 9:6)

4. We should give cheerfully (2 Corinthians 9:7)

5. We should give sacrificially (2 Corinthians 8:1-5)

Why Should we Give?

1. The example of Jesus (2 Corinthians 8:9)

2. The command of Jesus (John 15:12-13)
