A student learning objective is an academic goal for a teacher’s students that is set at the start of a course. It represents the most important learning.
Presentation transcript:

We’re off and running with Course SLOs & GELOs Now it’s time to take on PROLOs

Multiple approaches are possible. Choose the approach that works best for your department.

 Start with PROLO matrix and course SLO reports.  Determine PROLOs to be assessed.  For each PROLO, use matrix to find courses associated with the PROLO.  Use course SLO reports to determine if that PROLO has been assessed as a course SLO.  Create PROLO assessment report using results of existing course SLO assessments.

 A&R provides a list of students completing the department’s degrees & certificates.  Program completers are contacted and invited to participate in an exit assessment.  Create assessment that addresses the PROLOs. (Exam, project, portfolio, etc.)  Create PROLO assessment report using results of exit assessment.

 Identify courses that students typically take at the end of a program.  Within these capstone courses, instructors ask students “Is this the last class for your _______ degree or certificate?”  Separately assess these students throughout the semester, focusing on the PROLOs.  Create PROLO assessment report using results of these assessments.

 Some programs prepare students for licensing with federal, state, and industry agencies.  These agencies provide reports of how our students perform on these external assessments.  Create PROLO assessment report using these reports.

 “Embedded Approach”  Link student service unit SLOs to Student Service Division’s ProLO matrix. These 19 ProLOs are aligned with GELOs.  Conduct broad based discussions across all student services units and instruction on common ProLOs, using SLO assessments.  Create ProLO assessment report based upon the outcomes of these broad based discussions.

 Course embedded: Aligning and compiling existing course assessments with PROLOs.  Program completer: Students may choose not to participate; May take several semesters to gather a large enough sample to be useful.  Capstone courses: Students are self- identified; May take several semesters to gather a large enough sample to be useful.  External Testing: In many cases, does not apply.

 Course embedded: No additional assessment; alignment of PROLOs and courses already exists.  Program completer: Accurate snapshot of what students can do upon completion of the program.  Capstone courses: Uses existing course assessments; Assessment occurs at or near program completion.  External testing: Someone else does the work; Assessment directly relates to career skills.

Multiple approaches are possible. Choose the approach that works best for your department.
