Visit Carriage Hill Farm to learn about life in the 1800s. Use websites to do a research project about Ohio. Students will research how their families came to Ohio. Create a play about how Ohio was settled and have the students perform it. Write a paper on the prompt “what if you lived in the 1800s?”.

Research an Ohio president. Include information to present to the class. Visit the Air Force Museum, and discuss the impact of the Wright brothers on flight. Visit Clifton Gorge to see where Daniel Boon jumped the river, running from the Indians. Research the current governor or the mayor of the town. Write a paper describing what that person does. Write a persuasive letter to the local state representative about something you believe needs to be addressed.

Students will find five web pages pertaining to Ohio at Visit the learning center to experince different cultures. Research products made overseas that are used in Ohio. Write an essay if we had no support from other countries. Break class into groups from different countries. Each country is responsible for trade agreements and foreign policies.

Plant corn to compete in corn seed olympics. Students will visit a court house and talk with a judge about how they make decisions. Read Understanding the Judical system and discuss the decision making process. Find five website that deal with Ohio decision making. Take a field trip to a farm and discuss it’s importance to Ohio.

Hold a mock trail in the classroom with the students playing all the parts. Take a field trip to a court room. Discuss the difference between the Ohio judical system and the federal judical system. Draw a picture of the checks and balance system. Watch c-span and discuss as a class what is going on.

Discuss voting and why it is the responsibility of every citizen to vote Research the word citizen. Discuss the meaning. Talk about who are and are not citizens in Ohio. Talk about what makes a person a citizen. Write a paper about what your responsibilities are at home.

Through this unit, students will learn about Ohio and the many processes and people that made and shaped this great state. Students will be engaged in many creative activities which will help them to retain the information better. The students will develop a greater appreciation for their state and the democratic processes.
