Testing English for Specific Purposes in Science By Ruth Wolff

What is “Testing English for Specific Purposes in Science” (TESPIS)? A project that started in 2009 with 9 partners. Subsidized by European Union as part of the Lifelong Learning Program. Founded on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). 2

Aim of TESPIS: to develop examinations for special subject areas such as therapy, chemistry, conservation science and more to come. Basis of TESPIS: general international language examinations that already exist. Purpose: to equip scientists with a good set of English skills and provide better employment possibilities for studying and living abroad. 3

What is the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR)? Provides a method of assessing and teaching which applies to all languages in Europe. Used as a guideline to describe achievements of learners of foreign languages across Europe. Serves as a benchmark for other bodies and institutions. 4

Certificates will be sent to home address in 1- 2 months. 3.Do the score results lose their validity after a certain amount of time? Validity of score results does not expire. 4. How many times can I retake the test? You can retake the test as often as you want. 9

Do not forget to: bring a photo ID to the exam. bring your glasses, not only to the exam but also to the presentations. save yourself enough time to transfer your answers to the official answer sheet. 10

The main purpose of the test is to see how well you can communicate and understand English. It is important that you can get across the points you are trying to make without causing any great misunderstandings. The problems that result from bad communications are illustrated by a recent faux pas made by the Japanese Prime Minister, Mr. Mori! 11
