The Muscular System Pgs 46-47
Intro Video
2 Functions of the muscular system
1 st Function of the muscular system
Function of the muscular system Provides movement In conjunction with the skeletal system
2 nd Function of the muscular system
Helps organs carry out life functions
3 Types of Muscles
1 st Type of Muscle.
Skeletal Muscles
Properties of Skeletal Muscles Majority of your muscles
Striated Striped appearance
Connect to bones with tendons
They are voluntary
These muscles help you move.
React quick, but also tire quick
How muscles deal with getting tired The fibers inside alternate being used
Take a pencil Fold a paper clip so it is resting on the pencil Not supporting paper clip in any way and it must remain perpendicular to paper Try to make the paper clip stay still Or hold above paper and try to make stay still
It’s a good thing your heart is not made of Skeletal Muscle How long can you make your hand a heart Open fully and close every second
2 nd Type of Muscle Smooth Muscle
Smooth Muscles: found in the walls of internal organs and the blood vessels.
They are involuntary
They react slowly and and tire more slowly than skeletal muscle.
3 rd Type of Muscle Cardiac Muscles
Cardiac Muscles: Muscles that make up the heart. Striated

Why do your muscles feel “bigger”?
Figure it out based on animation sciences.com/en/a85-biceps-and-triceps
Muscles Work in Pairs Muscles can only contract, they do not extend or get larger. Skeletal muscles work in pairs so when one contracts the other relaxes. Examples: Biceps/Triceps, Hamstring/Quadriceps
String can only pull not push String on both sides of a ruler demonstration
