BL1U at TRIUMF UCN Beamline BL1U Layout (Nov 2011) C.A.Davis

Proposed BL1U at TRIUMF The Beamline (BL1U) is “naturally” divided into 3 Sections Cyclotron Vault BL1A Immovable Block Spallation Target

Section 1 in the Cyclotron Vault Shielding KEK Steerers 12 mr Kick Vertically 2 beams in large  pipe Shielding  Kicker is a Critical Element  Kicker is being designed by Mike Barnes (CERN)  KEK Steering magnets for BL1U already “reserved” and put aside (at KEK)

(Spare Space; fits an extra “Bunny” Quad, if needed) 18.5° Bender (KEK) Beam Blocker for Safety: Allows access to Heavy Ice Cryostat (KEK) Lambertson 1A to  SR, Beam Dump 9° Bend horizontally; Takes out vertical bend; Beam is lower by ~ 7 cm  Lambertson Septum design should begin soon (Specifications almost complete)  Beam Blocker (+ 2 benders “OFF” define a “SAFE” condition for us to access the Heavy-Ice Cryostat from above).  TRIUMF standard 4” steering magnet  allows for vertical correction into Bender  18.5° Bender is presently being built in Japan (KEK).  Immovable Block supports M15 muon channel. We will have to drill/bore through it. Section 2

Section 3 TRIUMF Quads (from M20) KEK Steerers Targeting Monitors Shine Blocker Beam Scanning Monitor  Two 8” Quads recycled from TRIUMF M20 muon channel  Second pair of KEK steering magnets  Shine Blocker will allow access to section 3 of BL1U (blocks  ’s from activated spallation target)

 Located at various points in the beamlines (including BL1U): - Monitors for Beam-tuning and for final targeting - Radiation (spill) monitors - Pumps (number and locations still being decided) - Gate valves (fast valves to protect Cyclotron vacuum)  Services: - Electric power, water, compressed air “services” already exists for 2 muon channels and 1 primary beamline (BL1B), that are being removed. - These services will be relocated to meet BL1U needs.  Cranes: Two TRIUMF 50-ton crane gantries cover the entire Hall Monitors, Safety & Services
