20 th to 21 st Century Music Tatyana Lark Period 6

What was music like? Some of the music in the early 2oth century were extensions of the Romantic style, but most 20 th century music was a type of rebellion Composers tried to come up with their own music and not stick with the standard There were different types of music like: Neo-primitivism – rougher energy music Expressionism – more emotional tones Neo-classicism – cleanly structured forms of music

Who was it affecting? Music in the early 20 th century affected all people As new types of music evolved, even African Americans influenced music by introducing jazz, which appealed to many people because of its different beat and rhythm With different types of music, appealing to different tastes, almost everyone in the early 20 th century were able to find a type of music that they would like.

What influenced its existence? Nationalism had an influence on music in the 20 th century Many composers were inspired by folk songs, jazz and popular music Technology had a large impact on music as well Some sounds were electronically generated to go along actual instruments Others used computers to help compose music

What impact did it have on the U.S then? There wasn’t very much entertainment in the U.S back then The invention of the radio was important because people were able to listen to music more and get their information better New music helped with entertainment and gave people a sense of inspiration, depending on the message of the music.

What impact does it have on the U.S now? Music is now a part of our every day lives People sometimes feel relaxed by music. Others feel that it is good for helping with emotions, as they are able to relate to the emotions of the singer or songwriter Doctors and therapists also use music now to help patients with anxiety or to help change the person’s behavior Songs today may inspire us to contemplate what is being told in the lyrics and relate it to our lives This can be a negative or positive effect depending on the song and the message that it is giving.

How does it reflect the times? When looking at the change of music from the 20 th to the 21 st century, you can see how much music has evolved There are now many different genres of music, singers, and composers. Technology, since the early 20 th century, has evolved – making music more unique with the different effects that are available Messages of music have changed also, fitting the different emotions of virtually everyone.

Oral History Interview with Walta Lark: In the 20 th century, African American artists listened to Rhythm and blues, while whites often listened to country music. African Americans listened to Rhythm n’ Blues because they didn’t really enjoy the music that was being played on the radio. They wanted music that they could relate to This music didn’t have much of an impact on most people except for the ones that enjoyed it. Later on in the 20 th century, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis took music from blacks and made it their own.
