Deficiency Notices 9 weeks grades were entered Monday You received a phone call home if you are failing USA Test Prep makeup assignment due SUNDAY, MARCH 29th , will be a makeup project grade

Group Project You will complete the project in your table groups, it is up to your group which project you select You will have some class time to work on these projects, but not much Your group must work outside of class to gather your information/prepare, so that when you have group work time in class, you can record, etc If you have a serious objection to the group you are in, you may bring your concern to me in the form of a two paragraph explanation as well as a potential solution

March Madness I’ve created a Bracket Challenge for anyone who is interested in joining Buy in: Write down who you think is going to win the National Championship in ARE format! Example: A- The University of Notre Dame is going to win the NCAA Basketball National Championship. R- ND has the best backcourt in the NCAA and has beaten the best of the best in the tournament. E- They just won the ACC Championship, and they have beaten four teams ranked #1 during the season. WINNER GETS 50 POINTS EXTRA CREDIT

Recap Video SparkNotes recap from Act I, Scene II (Cassius trying to convince Brutus to help him kill Caesar) to Act II, Scene I http://www.sparknotes.com/sparknotes/video/juliuscaesar

Act I, Scene ii reflection Some did great, others not so much Out of 20 points, if you completed DURING the test, you most likely got extra credit C (claim) 1 (argumentative/rhetorical appeal 1) 2 (argumentative/rhetorical appeal 2) Hardly anyone completed the line that says What is his purpose? Everyone else needs to fill out half sheet to receive 20 points for that portion of the test

Brutus’s soliloquy Shakespeare frequently included soliloquys in his plays A soliloquy is an act of speaking one’s thoughts aloud by oneself, regardless of who is listening How would you describe Brutus’s character up to this point in the play?

Review of universal theme Who remembers what a universal theme is? A universal theme is a message that can be seen across texts/books/movies, etc Which universal theme did we discuss in class last week? Betrayal Be thinking about betrayal and other potential universal themes as you read Brutus’s soliloquy

Follow along As the text is read https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJUKcQ-NYSE

Annotate and identify claim Work IN YOUR GROUPS to annotate and identify Brutus’s claim…Keep in mind Brutus is talking to HIMSELF… what is he trying to do/convince himself of? What is he trying to convince the audience of? Annotate (highlight, underline) unknown words, mark what words/phrases might mean in modern English Find details Brutus uses to SUPPORT his claim, as well as figurative language he uses to illustrate his reasoning Write his claim on the bottom of your text

Charting text Charting text basically means to break it down When we chart a text, we closely read what is on the page to determine both what the characters are SAYING and what the characters are DOING When charting text, we write what the characters are saying (by translating and summarizing) in the left margin, and write what the characters are doing (what is the purpose of the character’s words? What is he trying to do?) in the right margin

Class practice- SAYING _________________ He must die. Personally, I have no reason to be upset with him But for the people, it must be done. If he becomes king, Would his nature change? That is the question It must be by his death: and for my part, I know no personal cause to spurn at him, But for the general. He would be crown'd: How that might change his nature, there's the question.

Class practice- DOING _________________ What is Brutus trying to convince himself of? Brutus is trying to talk himself through this dilemma he is facing. He asks himself a rhetorical question to convince himself that Caesar’s nature will become evil once he becomes king It must be by his death: and for my part, I know no personal cause to spurn at him, But for the general. He would be crown'd: How that might change his nature, there's the question.

Group work- Chart the text In your groups, you need to chart the text both LEFT and RIGHT Most of you have already charted the LEFT side (translation), so begin working on the right side RIGHT= what characters are DOING (purpose of character’s words, what is he trying to do?)

Exit ticket What is Brutus trying to do in his soliloquy? Respond in ARE format.
