Advisor Advisee 7 th Grade Proper Thank You’s
Why is it so hard to write a thank you note? Usually you have the wrong attitude when writing a thank you note. Think of it as a chance to make the person who gave you the gift feel good; instead of looking at it as a chore.
When do I write a thank you? If in doubt, do it anyway. It is better to “over thank” than “under thank”. A thank you note should be written no matter the reason you received a gift. You should also write a note of thanks if a service was provided or hospitality extended.
When do I not have to write a thank you? Normally, you do not have to write a note of thanks to your parents. Normally, you would not have to write a note of thanks to the lady that you carpool to soccer with each Tuesday. Your verbal thanks is enough. However, what would they think if you did send a one time thank you note….
Things to remember Write them immediately! It gets harder with each passing day. Hand write the note. If your hand writing is truly illegible, a printed thank you (but personally signed) thank you is better than nothing.
How do I write it? Don’t begin with “Thank you for…” If thanking someone for allowing you to visit, begin with: “I am back safe and sound in Murfreesboro. The plan ride back was uneventful, I guess that is good.” Always try to mention the gift by name. For example: “All of my friends are jealous of the new ipod.”
What if it is money? If you have been given money, tell how you are going to spend it. What if I am just saving up? Tell them what you are saving for.
And finally…. DON’T FORGET TO MAIL IT!!! If you give it to your parents to mail, follow up and make sure it was mailed.
