Map Interpretation
Shatin
Draw a sketch map to show the land use of the area within easting 10 and 12; northing 78 and 80
Residential area Recreational area Industrial area Woodland Scale 1:20,000
Transect
Physical Constraint on expansion Steep relief: limited flatland River channel: restrict further reclamation Country park/Nature reserve: environmental conservation
Ways to Gain Land Sea reclamation: straight coastline Leveling of hill slopes: road cuttings at 1181, 1079 Conversion of farmlands: Cultivated land near Prince of Wales Hospital
Modification on Shing Mun River straightened river channel: straight shoreline narrowed: with reclamation reduced and regular river discharge: the building of the Shing Mun Reservoir
Modification on Shing Mun River inflow of sea water: reduced discharge polluted river water: industrial areas and residential areas
Drainage Pattern 0678 lower drainage density flowing northwestwards dense vegetation cover flow into reservoirs protected within the country park no settlements less footpaths/less compaction no pylons/electric wire towers 0878 higher drainage density flowing southeastward sparsely vegetated flow across farmlands not within country park more settlements more footpaths/more compaction with pylons
Ma On Shan
Transect RR R – main road Grass and scrubs Woodland Private housing Recreational area Public housing
Land Acquisition leveling of slope because of presence of artificial slopes, proximity to foothill Kam Ying Court(155822) Saddle Ridge Garden(156824) Reclamation because of proximity to coast, straight shoreline Fok On Garden(145824) Bay Shore Towers(150825)
Is Ma On Shan Self-contained ? Ma On Shan is not much self-contained. Residential accounts for the dominant land use (probably coupled with some retailing, small-scale commercial & recreational) while other major land uses, such as industrial, business & large scale commercial are lacking. Therefore there are not enough employment opportunities. There are not enough social and public facilities, e.g. there is no hospital.
Human Impact on Stream Flow Deforestation leads to the reduction of infiltration Farming irrigation at Mau Ping(160780) and Mui Tsz Lam(152788) Water for domestic uses by the villagers of the settlements (161799) Mining activities(163801) Construction of catchwater and water tunnel(grid square 1579)
Environmental Destruction Soil erosion Pollution of streams Air and noise pollution Affect channel flow because of Deforestation Quarry and cutting of slopes Debris dumping Transport of ores Domestic wastes of the miners
Government Measures incorporate it into Ma On Shan Country Park change it into a cultural, historical recreational landmark re-afforestation under the country park planning restore scenic beauty reduce soil erosion and pollution
