God created the earth, but then gave humans the power of reason and observation –God left the world to function according to natural laws Natural laws would replace “phenomena” One could perfect human society by applying reason John Locke –Natural law dictates that the government should rest with the consent of the people –Respect the natural rights of all

The Enlightenment Man could perfect world by removing human obstacles that obstructed natural law Clockmaker approach to god –Earth should just follow natural laws to achieve harmony –God was not still present - one could not communicate with Him Reason became the new “faith” and man became the new “god” Must remove all unnatural laws to have perfectly functioning society
