Polynomials Algebra 1 Lesson 9-4 By: Thomas Parise

!!  Definitions  !! ~~~ Please copy into your notebook ~~~ ~Polynomials- monomial or sum of monomials ~Binomial- sum of two polynomials ~Trinomial- sum of three polynomials ~The degree of a polynomial is the greatest degree of each term. EX: 9xy +2 would =2 ~The degree of a monomial is the sum of the exponents of its variables

Example 1 determine if polynomial, monomial, and trinomial Step 1 ~ write problem 3a-7bc Step 2 ~ rewrite problem 3a+(-7bc) ~~It has two polynomials so it’s a monomial because it has two polynomials.

Example 2 Step 1 ~ write problem ~3x 2 + 7a -2 +a Step 2 ~ add like terms~3x 2 + 8a – 2 Since three different types it’s a trinomial because it has three polynomials.
