 Monomial: an expression that is a number, a variable, or a product of a number and a variable.  Examples:

 Polynomial: a monomial or the sum or difference of monomials (called terms).  Examples:

 Polynomials can be classified by the number of terms: ◦ 1 term = monomial ◦ 2 terms = binomial ◦ 3 terms = trinomial

 Degree of a monomial: the sum of the exponents of the variables.

Find the degree of each monomial. a. 18 b. 3xy 3 c. 6c The degree of a nonzero constant is 0. Degree: 0 The exponents are 1 and 3. Their sum is 4. Degree: 4 6c = 6c 1. The exponent is 1. Degree: 1

 Degree of a polynomial: the highest degree of an individual term.  Examples:

 Standard Form: the degrees of the terms decrease from left to right.  Examples:

Write the polynomial in standard form. Then name the polynomial by its degree and the number of its terms. –2 + 7x linear binomial Place terms in order. 7x – 2

Write the polynomial in standard form. Then name the polynomial by its degree and the number of its terms. 3x 5 – 2 – 2x 5 + 7x x 5 + 7x – 2Combine like terms. fifth degree trinomial Place terms in order. 3x 5 – 2x 5 + 7x – 2
