what the subject is, has, does, or feels verb

It’s what the subject ‘does’; it’s what you do! action verb

connects the subject to a noun or adjective Linking verb

a verb that helps the main verb Helping Verb

Practice: Label these sentences on your own paper. Jillyan played with her dishes. Jim presented Lori the award for kindness. During the ceremony Chris delivered an impressive speech to the audience. Clean your room!

has a direct object transitive

answers the question ‘to whom’ an action is done indirect object

does NOT have a direct object Intransitive

follows a linking verb; tells what the subject is like Predicate Adjective

answers ‘whom’ or ‘what’ after an action verb direct object

fancy name for verb predicate

follows a linking verb; tells what the subject ‘is’; renames the subject Predicate noun

Important to Know: We eliminate prepositional phrases because they will NOT contain the subject, verb, direct object, indirect object, predicate noun, nor predicate adjective. Sentences do NOT have to have prepositional phrases. Indirect objects are rare. Remember: The subject of ALL imperative sentences (commands) is the “understood you.” Example: Complete the assignment. (You!)

Parts of Speech Labeling We will label each part of speech. Cross out prepositional phrases. Underline subject once. Underline verb twice Identify direct object with DO Indentify indirect object with IO Predicate Nouns (PN) Predicate Adjectives (PA)
