Ask the key questions: What + the verb = subject Subject + verb + what = Direct object Subject + linking verb + what = Predicate nominative Preposition + gerund = object of the preposition

Gerund as Subject What + the verb = subject Singing in the choir is my favorite pastime.

Gerund as Direct Object Subject + verb + what = Direct object You must make singing a priority if you plan on it becoming a career path.

Gerund as Predicate Noun Subject + linking verb + what = Predicate nominative My favorite activity is singing.
