Western NC Historic Flooding Issues ► Buncombe County  Most flooding from the French Broad will be to agriculture  Some commercial within the City of Asheville.  It will cause road closures and isolation of communities.  The county has some large junkyards located in the floodplain that would be impacted.

Western NC Historic Flooding Issues ► Madison County  Town of Marshal – Elementary School experiences flooding from the French Broad  Shelton Laurel Community – The Shelton Laurel Elementary School and residences along Shelton Laurel Creek and Little Laurel Creek

Western NC Historic Flooding Issues ► Henderson County  Hendersonville – Considerable commercial property at risk from Mud Creek. This business district has a history of flooding. ► Macon County  Commercial development in Franklin from the Little Tennessee River

Western NC Historic Flooding Issues ► Transylvania County  Brevard – Brevard College may experience flooding from King Creek as well as residences.  County – The French Broad historically comes out of its banks and causes considerable agriculture flooding and impacts some mobile home parks south of Brevard.  Rosman – the French Broad River starts just upstream from the Town of Rosman and has flooded this community many times.

Western NC Historic Flooding Issues ► Haywood County  Waynesville – Residential and commercial property is at risk from Allen Creek and Richland Creek. Richland Creek flooding will impact most of the commercial property.  Maggie Valley – A disaster waiting to happen. Practically all development is located around Jonathan Creek with little regard to flooding potential. Both residential and commercial property will be impacted.  Haywood County has numerous RV parks (100’s of units) that are located along the banks of Jonathan Creek. Potential for tragedy if adequate warning and evacuation is not received. Most are Floridians trying to avoid the hot summers and hurricanes  Canton – Commercial development along the Pigeon River

Western NC Historic Flooding Issues ► Eastern Band of Cherokee  The casino and conference center is located in the floodplain of the Soco River, they are elevated, but to an old flood study.  Commercial property along the Oconaluftee River  Numerous campgrounds and RV parks must be evacuated.

Western NC Historic Flooding Issues ► Swain County  Bryson City – Many, if not most of the structures in the business district are located in the floodplain of the Tuckasegee River and are as much as 3-4 feet below base flood elevation ► Jackson County  Western Carolina University/ Cullowhee may experience flooding from the Tuckasegee River. Mostly non-residential.
