What is counselling ?

Counselling – a definition The Concise Oxford Dictionary (9 th Edition) gives at least two definitions of counselling, which appear to be conflicting, adding to potential confusion: “give advice to (a person) on social or personal problems, especially professionally.” “the process of assisting and guiding clients, especially by a trained person on a professional basis, to resolve especially personal, social, or psychological problems and difficulties.”

Starter Write down as many situations where individual’s may seek the help of a professional advisor such as a councillor?

Often counselling is sought out at times of change or crisis, however, counselling can also help us at anytime of our life. Counselling involves talking with a person in a way that helps that person solve a problem or helps create conditions that will cause the person to understand and improve their behaviour, character, values or life circumstances.

Counselling and Maslow Hierarchy When using counselling skills in order to initiate, develop and maintain a helping relationship, practitioners must have an understanding the Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. Can you remember them ? Why would they be important when using counselling skills ?

Look at the following scenario below-is this room appropriate for a counselling session?? Yes/ No

Before we focus on what a successful counselling session would involve-Look at the following scenario

Appropriate ventilation Proper ventilation helps improve indoor air quality. Ventilation can control indoor humidity and airborne contaminants. What would happen if the room is not appropriately ventilated ?

The importance of proper lighting Lighting is the most appropriate part of a counselling session. Good lighting is conducive to efficient working and high morale, and reduction of eyestrain. Proper lighting is essential for a counselling session because of the following reasons:

Chairs In a counselling session chairs are crucial, chairs should be at 45% angle as this is the best way to observe body language without creating a confrontational effect. Why do you think the arrangement of chairs is key to initiating and creating an effective counselling session?

Look at the following scenario below-is this room appropriate for a counselling session?? Yes/ No How would we redesign this area in order to make it more effective for a counselling session, considering the following aspects? Light Ventilation Space Privacy Physical barriers Colour or paint of the room

Before we focus on what a successful counselling session would involve-Look at the following scenario

Initiating the counselling session Initiate - what can you do to inform the client of how you may help them and the structure of the sessions.

Initiating the counselling session It is now 6 weeks since Mrs. Asta lost both of her children in the tragic fire which destroyed their home. Mrs. Asta has so far been unable to return to work and her employer has referred her to you as an Employee Assistance Program Counsellor for counselling. How would you initiate the helping relationship?

Ms Vinnel lost her job a month ago due to redundancies in her workplace. Ms. Vinnel is 28 years old, a single parent and mother of 5 children ranging from ages 6 months to 8 years. She has been employed at her current workplace for well over 10 years. She feels depressed and overwhelmed and 3 days ago threatened to end her life and that of her children in desperation. She has been referred to you for an initial assessment. How would you initiate the helping relationship ?

What would you do ? Using Ms Vinnel case study, how would you maintain, develop and end your helping relationship with her ?

Maintaining, developing and ending a relationship a helping relationship. In order to maintain- you may have to remind the client of their and your boundaries and the ongoing responsibilities and their feedback from previous sessions. Developing the relationship - encourage the client to be open and honest as well as extending the remit of the sessions The conclusion of the relationship should be known to both parties in order that the client can have time to adjust and take forward the assistance given

Procedure-Stages of the counselling process-Role play The counselling process can be viewed simply as a three- stage process which involves Initiating a counselling relationship, building and working in the relationship and terminating the relationship. Initiating a counselling relationship involves: Meeting the client; Discussion of surface issues; Setting limits and guidelines, e.g., goals, meeting times, session duration, etc. for the process.

Building and working in the counselling relationship involves: Revelation of deeper issues; Ownership of feelings and possible emotional release; Generation of insight; Problem-solving and future planning; Action by the client.

Termination/ conclusion of the counselling relationship involves: Review and reflection; Disengagement from the counselling relationship by the client Task-We have just gone through what a typical counselling session may involve. Your task is to role play the following scenario-putting emphasis on do’s and don'ts –(what will a counsellor do when they first meet their client-what will there body language be like) 2-Which is the most important step in your opinion and why
