DEFINITION Information Literacy is defined as "the ability to define one’s information needs and then to access, evaluate, process and use retrieved information strategically." (Pradeepa Wijetunge, University of Colombo) CARICOM

SUB-THEME IDENTIFIED Based on the definition, the sub-themes are: – Defining information needs – Accessibility – Evaluation and Processing – Strategic Use of Information Retrieved CARICOM

DEFINING INFORMATION NEEDS This refers to a person’s ability to further refine their information needs in order to meet the pre-determined objective. Analysis of this sub-theme seeks to determine the role of ICT in defining information needs. CARICOM

DEFINING INFORMATION NEEDS: Indicators and Justification Indicators: Percent of population reporting that they use computers/internet for research Percent of population reporting that they use books/magazines for research Percentage of population reporting that they use television/radio for research Justification: Provides information on the population relative to their use of ICT when conducting research ( which reflects the act of refining ones information needs) CARICOM

DEFINING INFORMATION NEEDS: Indicators and Justification (cont’d) Indicators: Percent of employed reporting that they use computers/internet for work-related research Percent of employed reporting that they use books/magazines for work-related research Percent of employed reporting that they use television/radio for work-related research Justification: Drills down further and provides information on the employed relative to their use of ICT when conducting research CARICOM

DEFINING INFORMATION NEEDS: Indicators and Justification (cont’d) Indicators: Percent of unemployed reporting that they use computers/internet for job search/general research Percent of unemployed reporting that they use books/magazines for job search/general research Percent of unemployed reporting that they use television/radio for job search/general research Justification: Provides information on the unemployed relative to their use of ICT when conducting job search (or any research) CARICOM

ACCESSIBILITY Refers to a person’s ability to access the information that is needed. Analysis of this sub-theme seeks to determine how ICT facilitates access to the information that is needed. CARICOM

ACCESSIBILITY: Indicators and Justification Indicator: Titles (print newspapers/book production) per 1,000 inhabitants Justification: Indicates the level of access the population has to Titles. CARICOM

ACCESSIBILITY: Indicators and Justification (cont’d) Indicator: Radio/television sets per 100 or 1000 inhabitants Channels (on Radio/television) per 1000 inhabitants No of online newspapers/internet radio stations per 1,000 inhabitants Justification: Indicates the level of access the population has to other forms of information besides Titles. CARICOM

ACCESSIBILITY: Indicators and Justification (cont’d) Indicator: Percent of annual radio/television broadcasting time devoted to news and information, or education and science Justification: Evaluates the amount of time per year that is devoted to providing basic information. CARICOM

EVALUATION AND PROCESSING Refers to a person’s ability to review and interpret the information after it has been received. Analysis of this sub-theme seeks to determine whether ICT facilitates faster and more efficient evaluation and processing of information. CARICOM

EVALUATION AND PROCESSING: Indicators and Justification Indicators: Percent of population reporting improvement in processing/evaluating information via the use of computers Percent of population reporting improvement in processing/evaluating information via the use of television/radios Justification Provides information on the success achieved by the general population in processing and valuating information using ICT. CARICOM

EVALUATION AND PROCESSING: Indicators and Justification (cont’d) Indicators: Percent of employed reporting improvement in processing/evaluating information via the use of computers Percent of employed reporting improvement in processing/evaluating information via the use of television/radios Justification Provides information on the success achieved by the employed in processing and evaluating information using ICT. CARICOM

EVALUATION AND PROCESSING: Indicators and Justification (cont’d) Indicators: Percent of students reporting improvement in processing/evaluating information via the use of computers Percent of students reporting improvement in processing/evaluating information via the use of television/radios Justification Shows the success students experienced in Processing and evaluating information using ICT. CARICOM

STRATEGIC USE OF INFORMATION Refers to the to which the objectives set were achieved. It is presumed that, given the improved access to information and ability to process and evaluate information more effectively, ICT facilitates greater achievement of objectives. CARICOM

STRATEGIC USE OF INFORMATION Indicators and Justification Justification: Facilitates an analysis of the general population as against those who are employed relative to the use of ICT in reaching their objectives. CARICOM
