Characters Chapter 1-4 The Call of the Wild

Buck Part German shepherd, part St. Bernard; main character in the novel

Spitz : Treacherously friendly, underhanded (-pawed) white dog

Perrault : French Canadian who buys Buck first; “a little weazend man who spat broken English and many strange and uncouth exclamations which Buck could not understand.” (8-9)

François: Swarthy French Canadian who teams with Perrault

Judge : Buck’s original owner; gives Buck the domesticated life he thinks he loves

Manuel: the gardener’s helper who stole Buck to pay off his gambling debt

Curly Good-natured Newfoundland bought by Perrault On the Narwhal with Buck Killed by a group of Huskies for being too friendly

Dave Experienced dog that primarily eats and sleeps and just wants to be left alone Wheeler Ate through the traces when he was taken out by the Scot-Half Breed Had to be shot– it was the humane thing to do
