Smart Core and Core Graduation Paths Core Graduation Math Requirements 4 Units – One (1) unit of Algebra or equivalent [Algebra A&B] – One (1) unit of Geometry or equivalent [Geometry A&B] – All math units must build on the base of algebra and geometry knowledge and skills. – Comparable concurrent credit courses may be substituted where applicable. NOTICE: Changes in the Arkansas Academic Challenge (Lottery) Scholarship requirements mandate that students graduating in 2014 and beyond must graduate under Smart Core.

Smart Core and Core Graduation Paths Smart Core Graduation Math Requirements 4 Units [at least one unit must be gained in either 11 th or 12 th grade] – Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II must all be completed* – One unit above and beyond Algebra II Advanced Topics and Modeling in Mathematics Algebra III Calculus Linear Systems and Statistics Mathematical Applications and Algorithms Pre-Calculus College Board AP Math Courses** International Baccalaureate Courses** Concurrent Math Courses

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) Accessing the Common Core State Standards: While there are other sites out there that are related to the CCSS, is the official site.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) How to read the CCSSM – Grade level standards are categorized by 3 different groupings or “grain sizes” Standards – define what students should understand and be able to do. Clusters – are groups of related standards. Domains – larger groups of related standards.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM)

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) How to read the PARCC Model Content Frameworks (MCF) – The MCF provides the following information: Individual end-of-course overviews Examples of key advances from previous grades or courses Discussion of Mathematical Practices in relation to course content Fluency recommendations Pathway summary table Assessment limits table for standards assessed on more than one end-of-course test.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) The MCF identify course specific emphasis for the standards Course emphases include: – Major Content – Supporting Content – Additional Content

Algebra I & Algebra A/B ADE’s position regarding offering Algebra I or Algebra A/B at the junior high level. – The majority of 8 th grade students probably need to be enrolled in a regular 8 th grade CCSS math course. – Only exceptional students should be enrolled in Algebra I or Algebra A/B at the middle school level. – Reminders: Course Approval Renewals Content has moved around/down Teach the content of the course

Algebra I & Algebra A/B – Suggestions: Schools need to have and follow a plan to place students in Algebra I or Algebra A/B at the 5-8 level. Though Algebra A/B is an available option right now, schools need to help students and parents make informed decisions that are in the best interest of the student.

SmartCore and the Academic Challenge Scholarship Students should be reminded of eligibility changes for the Arkansas Academic Challenge (Lottery) Scholarship, which require students graduating in 2014 and beyond to graduate under Smart Core. ages/fa_acs.aspx ages/fa_acs.aspx

Algebra I & Algebra A/B Framework Documents (3) for Algebra I, Algebra A, & Algebra B Algebra I – Committee based development – Familiar form – Precise language – PARCC alignment

Algebra I & Algebra A/B Algebra A & Algebra B – Two separate documents – Committee was charged to not simply lop the standards in half, but to consider: What standards could stand alone in each course What standards should span both courses The emphasis of each standard in each course and how that emphasis changed.

Algebra I & Algebra A/B – The committee worked to unpack the standards and place them within themes of instruction. – We have included those themes as an appendix to the documents. (option for schools to use)

Algebra I & Algebra A/B In the spring of 2013, a committee composed of Arkansas educators categorized each standard based on its cognitive demand or complexity. These categories include: – Descriptive Statistics (DS) – Number Sense (NS) – Linear Compare and Analyze (LCA) – Linear Create and Model (LCM) – Linear Compute and Solve (LCS) – Nonlinear Compare and Analyze (NCA) – Nonlinear Create and Model (NCM)

Algebra I & Algebra A/B In the spring of 2013, a committee composed of Arkansas educators categorized each standard based on its cognitive demand or complexity. These categories include (continued): – Nonlinear Compute and Solve (NCS) – Functions Linear Compare and Analyze (FLCA) – Functions Linear Create and Model (FLCM) – Functions Linear Compute and Solve (FLCS) – Functions Nonlinear Compare and Analyze (FNCA) – Functions Nonlinear Create and Model (FNCM) – Functions Nonlinear Compute and Solve (FNCS)
