The Nature of Turkish Rule Ottoman rule was an evolution of tribal institutions into a sedentary empire—rule was based on tribal factions tribal law took precedence over Muslim law. The Role of the Sultan—Head of the Ottoman Empire As Ottomans Emp grew—adapted Byzantine Bureaucracy – Influenced by Persian monarchial traditions / Byzantine Empire – Power was hereditary, with a son, but not always the eldest Those not chosen were executed- silk bowstring strangulation. The Harem—private domain of the Sultan – Did not choose a wife, but chose multiple concubines Sultan chosen from those women, they became queen mother – They were trained & educated like the janissaries- devshirme Administration of the Govt. –Sultan ruled through grand coucil – The Govt was led by the Grand Vizier- chose people through merit

Religion and Society in the Ottoman World Ottomans saw themselves as “defenders of the faith”—responsible for guiding the flock. Islamic law was applied to the empire-- Shari’ a The Treatment of Minorities- Largest minority- East. Christians—formed into “millet”—met with govt. All non-Muslims paid a tax– were encouraged to converted- but tolerated Social Classes—based on Occupation / residence Aside from rulers- peasants, artisans, merchants & nomads Peasants worked the land, artisans formed guilds, merchants were spec. The Position of Women Non Islamic women were allowed to follow their traditions Ottoman allowed Muslim women to own property / inherit / marry Therefore, more tolerant than traditional tribal groups.

The Ottomans Decline Ottomans reached their heights under Suleyman the Magnificent Also known as Suleyman Kununi- “the law giver” WHY???? Partly responsible for their decline- killed his own son empire left to Selim II ( the drunken sultan) The Empires deterioration 1. Ottomans were based on expansion- when they stopped expanding, the declined 2. Merit system evolved into a degenerate hereditary caste. 3. Increasing degree of material affluence & the impact of the West Ignored Muslim laws against alcohol and adultery 4. Decline in the competence of Sultans- Rivals were secluded The grand vizier slowly assumed more and more power. Ottoman Art- encouraged the arts—pottery, rugs, silk, and fabrics – Arts flourished simply because artists vied for the favor of the Sultan. Architecture—known for architecture—based mosques off of Hagia Sophia – Mosques were more open (Sinan) included libraries, school, hospital, & bazaar – Ottoman artists also known for their floral
