Title: The Face of Your Paper
A Title First impressions are strong impressions; a title ought therefore to be well studied, and to give, so far as its limits permits, a definite and concise indication of what is to come. -T. Clifford Allbutt
The Importance of The Title A thesis title is the first thing a reader reads. It should provide a concise view of the topic. It should give a sense of your approach to the issue. Titles need to be crafted carefully.
Length of the Title Titles should be short and clearly indicate to readers what your study is about. A long title can be confusing and is difficult for the reader to understand.
‘Waste’ words Often, these waste words appear right at the start of the title. (no need for descriptions) What are they? Examples: » “Studies on”, “Investigations on”, “Observations on”.
Abbreviation and Jargon Titles should almost never contain abbreviations, chemical formulas, proprietary names, outdated terminology and jargon.
In designing the title, ask yourself : “How would I look for this kind of information in the contents page”? ie. use ‘hydrochloric acid’ instead of ‘HCI’. Abbreviation and Jargon
