Coordinate Notes (Longitude and Latitude) EQ: What are the parts of a Mercator map?

Compass Directions- Never (North) Eat (East) Soggy (South) Waffles (W)

Latitude- Distance north or south of the equator Latitude lines are called parallels because unlike longitude lines, they will never touch The equator is set at 0 latitude

Imagine steps on a ladder Imagine steps on a ladder. The steps are horizontal but you move up and down on a ladder. Latitude lines run side to side on a globe but are measured north and south

Longitude- Distance east or west of the Prime Meridian. Longitude lines are called Meridians. The Prime Meridian is set at 0 longitude. Longitude lines curve and meet at the north and south poles. 180W = 180 E

West East North South NW NE SW SE Hemisphere – half of the globe (earth). There are 4 hemispheres. Quadrant- a quarter (1/4) of the globe (earth). West East South NW NE SW SE

Projections- A way of showing a round 3D surface like the earth flat map Flat maps distort size, shape, and distance

0 0 7. Reading a Map (Mercator Map) Read latitude first and longitude second. (___#___N or S, ___#__E or W) The latitude for equator is __________. The longitude for the prime meridian is __________. Examples: Read the coordinates using the map below. 0 0

W E N S 3 1 53N, 83E 30N, 30W 5 6 0, 150W 2 0, 60W 15S, 75E 4 38S, 0
