Value Definition Essay Checklist… Correct Proper Heading Length is between 700-800 words Creative Title Intriguing Opening Concludes by leaving the audience thinking (not a neat bow) 5 Types of Definitions embedded Works Cited (article, interview, other sources as needed) Personal Connections/Stories Direct Quote from article Organized into multiple paragraphs Utilizes short, punchy sentences Utilizes Equal ranking adjectives Contains answers to the following questions: How did this value become important to you? Is this value American? Why/How do you embody this value?

Signal Phrases Signal Phrases or Attributive Tags are an essential element of research writing. They: introduce source material indicate where source material comes from. shape your reader’s response to a source through appropriate word choice. So How Do You Write A Signal Phrase? Signal Phrases can be a single word, phrase, or sentence. They can appear before or after a quote, paraphrase, or summary. They often include verbs; be sure your word choice fits the context of the source. Example: According to Karin Killough, Director of the Education at Arcadia University, “QUOTE” (CITATION). A recent study at Harvard University claims that, “QUOTE” (CITATION).

Punctuation of Direct Quote w/In-Text Citation Signal Phrase + comma + quotation marks + Direct Quote beginning with a capital letter + quotation marks + parenthesis + Author's last name + page number (if available) + end parenthesis + period Example: According to the author, "On the sandbanks the rabbits sat as quietly as little gray, sculptured stones" (Steinbeck 2). If no author is given, use the title of the article in quotations in the in-text citation

Works Cited for an Online Article To cite a specific article from a website: Author(s) of internet article. "Name of internet article." Name of website. Editor(s) of website. Date of electronic publication. Associated institution. Date of access <URL>. Example: Smith, Fred. "New Football Recruits." Northwestern Football. Ed. Alex Shokey. 2004. Northwestern University. 6 June 2004. <http://www.football.northwestern.edu/recruits>.

Works Cited for an Interview Personal Interview: Name of interviewee Personal Interview Date of Interview Ex: Purdue, Pete. Personal interview. 1 December 2013. If you are using information from more than one personal interviews, you will need to use multiple entries on your works cited page.
