What they do… Electrical engineers design lighting and wiring in buildings. They build electronic systems for things we use, such as cell phones, TVs, and cars. They figure out ways that electricity or electronics can make things work better.

Knowledge… They understand mathematics, physics, technology, and design principles. They have knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, and electronic equipment. They have knowledge of computer hardware and software.

Skills… Electrical engineers must design and adapt technology to meet our needs. They must be able to determine how systems should work. They must be able to use critical thinking and problem-solving to reach solutions.

Tools they use… They use electronic measuring equipment to measure voltage and current. They use special computer software to analyze electronic problems. They use CAD (computer-aided design) software to draw electronic designs by computer.

Working conditions… Most electrical engineers work indoors in offices or labs. Electrical engineers usually work a normal 40 hour week. Many senior engineers manage teams of technicians on projects.

Training required… Electrical engineering requires at least a 4-year Bachelor of Science degree in engineering. Upper-level jobs usually require an additional Master of Science degree. Work-related experience is also helpful.

Who they work for… Electrical engineers work for: The auto industry Oil companies Airlines NASA Electronic companies Building construction companies

Income… Incomes range from $50,000 to $110,000, with average income approximately $78,000 per year. Overall employment is expected to grow at an average rate. This career will require approximately 50,000 new employees over the next 10 years.
