CASC – why become one? Both property and non-property owning clubs can benefit from the scheme. The key benefits of CASC registration include: 80% MANDATORY BUSINESS RATE RELIEF. Local authorities can offer up to 100% relief to clubs at their discretion. GIFT AID. A registered CASC can reclaim up to £25 in tax for every £100 donated. CORPORATION TAX EXEMPTION Profits derived from trading activities if their trading income is under £30,000 pa, and no need to complete a return. PROPERTY INCOME If gross property income is under £20,000 pa.

CASC - potential changes to constitution Almost certainly requires minor constitutional changes: Membership of the club must be open to the whole community The club facilities must be available to members without discrimination The club’s constitution must prevent profits of the club from being distributed amongst its members (i.e. any profits must go back into the club) The club must provide facilities for and encourage participation in an eligible sport (i.e. rugby league) The club constitution must state that on winding up of the club any surplus will be used for the good of the community (given to another CASC ideally)

Gift Aid Can claim Gift Aid on some donations – must be cash, not service/goods, and must come from a UK taxpayer Can claim 28p back for every £1.00 donated Potential areas to consider: Cash donations Donation of kit, food etc. (convert to cash) Auctions Annual dinners (on part of ‘ticket’) Cannot claim Gift Aid on: Membership fees Raffles Goods/services (not converted to cash)

Further Sources of Information RFL Finance can deliver a full presentation to a club, or group of clubs – or if you want to go ahead with the registration we can help with the process. Contact Andy Sorby on or for more HMRC – good source of information – go to – general information
