Background Knowledge Messages by the Mile Messages by the Mile was written to share information and facts. Thus, it’s genre is expository. People have long been fascinated by the “songs” of whales and the communication between elephants, but until recently people did not have the means to investigate them. Now, with technology, we can hear the noises of marine life. What do the whales voices (sounds) mean? We know that elephants communicate with each other, but what are they saying? Scientists conduct experiments, gather data, and analyze them. Their analyses are based on scientific principles but can be interpreted in different ways. Modern technology enables scientists to learn more about whales and elephants, but in the end their data are a matter of interpretation.

Purposes for reading To learn about whales’ and elephants’ communication. What do the whales’ sounds mean? How do elephants communicate to each other? What do elephants and whales have to do with communication?
