Declaration of Independence Objectives: 1. Create a Break Up Letter that follows the structure of the Declaration of Independence 2. Deconstruct the Declaration of Independence Do Now: List 3 ways people communicate with each other today. How were people able to communicate back in the 1700s?

What was the Declaration of Independence? It was essentially the American colonies breaking up with England

Parts of the Declaration of Independence Similar to your Break Up letter, the Declaration of Independence had 5 main parts to it: 1. Preamble 2. Statement of Beliefs 3. List of Complaints 4.Steps taken to address 5.Declaration

1. Preamble (Introduction) Explains the reasons for writing the Declaration States it is necessary to politically separate (America and England)

2. Statement of Beliefs All men are created equal Rights given to them by their Creator, NOT by the people running the government Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness  Unalienable Rights

List of Complaints The Founding Fathers are describing the events that the King has done against them such as: Keeping soldiers in America ready to fight the colonists Cut off trade with other countries Taxation without representation

Steps taken to address complaints The colonists did the following before breaking apart from England: Warned them Reminded them of the situation Appealed to them But England “fell deaf” to their voices Therefore, it was necessary for the colonists to take it to the next step

Declaration The colonies will now be independent from England and they will now be free, independent states “It’s Too Late to Apologize” Music Video
