The Packer Focus Community Matters Culture Matters Learning Matters Building the expectation and habits of EXCELLENCE

Purpose of Program IGNITION is a highly interactive and customized leadership development and mentorship program specifically designed to make 9 th grade transition a positive experience for new students and improve the overall performance of every student in the school.

What does research say….? The most significant component to establish a solid foundation for success in high school ( per research and literature ) starts at 9 th grade transition period. A successful 9 th grade transition program: – Lowers dropout rate Isle of Wight County Schools dropout rate 2.5% (Virginia Department of Education, 2015) The goal is to make the dropout rate at SHS 0%. – Combats external factors which hinder credit attainment and course completion. – Builds relationships; expands students network – Exposure to positive peers, college/career readiness opportunities – Build essential skills (leadership, communication, goal setting, etc.)

Student Driven-Student Led Student Leaders facilitate learning and activities. Areas of Focus: – Touring the building – Meeting with Teachers – Capturing the “Packer Spirit” – Teamwork Focus during School – Building a Resume – Networking – Organizational Skills Freshmen served this school year: 260 Student Leaders: 54

Next Steps…. Expand IGNITION program into 9 th grade Academy model. Focus will be placed on targeted academic support and peer mentorship. Create a Leadership Development Network with other schools to build capacity among student leaders.

Packer Vision Strategic Academic Support – Coaching and Remediation Support – Enrichment Opportunities – Graduation Plan (written plan to highlight goals and commitment to graduate in 4 years) – Interest survey to guide course scheduling and career selection. Sessions that “Begin with the End in Mind” – Career/College Readiness – Life Skills Dress to Impress Resume Building Organization Communication Skills – Leadership Skills Peer Mentorship – Leadership Development Opportunities – Expand network to other schools and student leadership organizations to build capacity and influence. – Ongoing training throughout the year to sharpen skills.
