13.2 War in Europe SETTING THE STAGE: On June 28, 1914, Archducke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, and his death wasn't just a ordinary incident because it brought the "Great War" nobody expected. The Alliance System Collapses: There were two rival camps at this time, the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance. As Austria-Hungary declared war to Serbia, other European countries also went to war to support. - A Chain Reaction: Because Russia was Serbia's ally, Russia prepared for war also by advancing to the borders. As Germany felt threatened, they declared war on Russia. Russia asked for France's help, but Germany declared war on France without the reaction which made Europe ready for battle. - The Schlieffen Plan: Germany wanted to end the war quickly. Since Russia lacked railroads, Germany decided to quickly finish France first and get ready for Russia. This plan was called the Schlieffen Plan. Germany knew France had their troops stand by the border, so they decided to go through the border of Belgium, a neutral country. However, Belgium refused, and this made Germany attack Belgium. Having a close relationship with Belgium, Britain also declared war on Germany. - European Nations Take Sides: By mid-August 1914, there were two groups fighting against each other. The Central Powers and the Allies. In the Central Powers, there were Germany and Austria-Hungary, and Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire later joins. In the Allies, there were Great Britain, France, and Russia. Japan and Italy soon joined the Allies. Many people believed the war would end soon, but they never knew how dreadful it would turn out to be. A Bloody Stalemate Along the Western Front: Germany's plan didn't end quickly after all. It rather turned out to be a very long fight in northern France known as the Western Front. - The Conflict Grinds to a Halt: By the end of August, Germany conquered Belgium and went into France. It almost seemed as if the Germans would sing victory, but the Allies were soon able to chase the Germans thanks to the intelligence they were able to possess. The first great battle, the First Battle of the Marne, was the Allies' victory. Because of this, the Germans weren't able to succeed the Schlieffen Plan. The Russians were attacking the east of Germany, now. Germany turned their troops to the east, and the Western Front was settled into a stalemate. A long war was awaiting for both the Central Powers and the Allies.
