A-ICE Answer the question. Introduce a quotation. Cite the quotation. Explain how your quotation relates to your answer.

Answer the Question This is your “controlling idea”. All of your evidence (quotations) will work to support your answer. Possible sentence structures: In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, archetypes work to _________. Archetypes ______________ in William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Archetypes affect the plot of the play in William Shakespeare’s Macbeth by __________. Archetypes in Shakespeare’s Macbeth help readers understand how his characters relate to one another.

Introduce the Quotation Find a quotation that supports your answer. Then, give some context or background information about the quote. For example: Archetypes in Shakespeare’s Macbeth help readers understand how his characters relate to one another. Banquo fits the archetype of the Loyal Retainer because of his dedication to honor and to the Scottish crown. When Macbeth hints that he wants his friend, Banquo, to follow his command at some future time, Banquo responds, “So I lose none in seeking to augment it, but still keep my bosom franchised and allegiance clear, I shall be counseled (Act II, scene i).”

Introduce the Quotation Possible sentence structures: In (Act, scene), (character) says, “_____.” (Character) states, “______”. In a conversation about _______, (Character) says, “_________”. When Momaday discusses the history of the Kiowa, he points out, “_______”.

Cite the Quotation Inside the quotation marks, before the period, indicate the act and scene where you found the quote. Archetypes in Shakespeare’s Macbeth help readers understand how his characters relate to one another.

Cite the Quotation Acts are always written in Roman numerals. Act I, II, II, IV, V… Scenes are written in lower-case Roman numerals. Scene i, ii, iii, iv, v, vi, vii…

Explain the Quotation *Do this two more times and you’re done!* Paraphrase the quotation. Explain how your quotation supports your answer. Archetypes in Shakespeare’s Macbeth help the audience understand relationships between the characters. Banquo fits the archetype of the Loyal Retainer because of his dedication to honor and to the Scottish crown. When Macbeth hints that he wants his friend, Banquo, to follow his command at some future time, Banquo responds, “So I lose none in seeking to augment it, but still keep my bosom franchised and allegiance clear, I shall be counseled (Act II, scene i).” In this quotation, Banquo, ever-honorable, says that he would be glad to do what Macbeth asks as long as his integrity either grows or remains intact. Readers can understand Macbeth and Banquo’s relationship here because Banquo is a recognizable character (an archetype): it is clear to both Macbeth and to the audience that Banquo is an admirable man, and a trusted friend. *Do this two more times and you’re done!*

Explain the Quotation Possible sentence structures: This quote shows __________. From ________, we see that _____________.
