Bellringer Oct 1: pd 2 Write on a piece of lined paper your name and date. Answer the following questions with complete sentences. Do not write the questions. Just number your answers. 1.What are my expectations for student behavior? 2.Why would you think these expectations are different when a substitute is here? 3.Why am I thoroughly embarrassed by my students’ behavior from Monday?

Review of Monday’s work and what you can expect. - we reviewed the answers to Outliers chapter 2. We reviewed the modes of discourse as they apply to Outliers chapter 2.

Narration - one might think of it as telling a story Description - to describe something—object, person, place, experience, emotion, situation, etc. (the goal is to paint an image that is vivid and moving in the mind of the reader). Exposition - to investigate an idea, evaluate evidence, expound on the idea, and set forth an argument concerning that idea in a clear and concise manner. (This can be accomplished through comparison and contrast, definition, example, the analysis of cause and effect, etc.) Argumentation - to investigate a topic; collect, generate, and evaluate evidence; and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner. This writing is similar to “exposition,” but requires more extensive research. Modes of Discourse: Nonfiction!

Song of Solomon discussion We discussed the myths of Circe and Icarus We discussed questions 6, 7, and 8 for the part I discussion questions. – You MUST be able to back up your opinions with evidence from the book. – You MUST give more than surface level observations about the book. Chapters 9-12 will be discussed on Monday, Oct. 6 instead of today.

Ticket Out Write on the back of your discussion questions for part I handout. What theme stands out for you so far for the novel, Song of Solomon?
