© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 3 14 iDataPlex servers, 16 cores, 24GB memory Powered on (Connected) and idle Running RHEL KVM Automatically bare-metal provisioned when discovered Datacenter Overview

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 4 Packing enabled Overcommit enabled - Nodes have 16 CPUs, a factor of two yields 32 vCPUs (i.e., one real CPU = two vCPUs)

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 5 Load Balance enabled High Availability enabled Select Energy Optimization

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 6 Enable Energy Optimization Power off idle hypervisors and keep at least one hypervisor connected (running) and two hypervisors on Standby Energy Optimization

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 7 Click Yes

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 8 View affect of the Energy Optimization Policy on the Data Center

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 9 The Datacenter is idle (i.e., no workload/VMs running) The idle hypervisors will be powered off leaving one (1) connected and two (2) on standby

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 10 Resources and workload (VMs) can be created and managed directly without the need for additional management portals. Click New to Create VMs Data Center Portal

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 11 Select the RHEL pattern Click Instantiate

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 12 Specify the number of VMs and click create

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 13 The VM quickly provisions to Active Click New to create another VM

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 16 Specify the number of VMs and click create

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 17 The VM quickly provisions to Active Select the Machines tab to see both VMs

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 18 Control and manage resources directly from the portal Click Power Click Manage Click Remote Access and open a consol

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 19 ********* Last login: Wed Apr 3 12:04: from admin.ca.ibm.com ~]# Remote consoles can be opened for the VMs and hypervisors hosts

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 20 Remote consoles can be opened for the VMs and hypervisors hosts Select the Hypervisor Hosts tab

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 21 Both VMs were started on the same hypervisor because the Packing policy is enabled Select the Machines tab to see the VM details Select the Cluster tab to create load on the system

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 22 Meet Demand Click the Modify button and select the Add Machines command

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 23 Start and additional 100 VMs to add load to the system

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 24 Start and additional 100 VMs to add load to the system The additional 100 VMs are quickly provisioned and powered on Click to Refresh the view

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 27 Start and additional 100 VMs to add load to the system The VMs are powered on, registered and ready for use Select the Hypervisor Hosts table to see changes to their states

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 28 Balance Workloads The data center went from one four hypervisors to handle the additional load Additional Hypervisors were started to maintain the pool of two standby Click the Configure button and select the Demo Load command

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 29 The Demo command adds load on hypervisor 03 and the CPU utilization spikes past the upper limit of 70%

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 30 VMs are migrated away from host 03 to balance the workload VMs are started on the standby host and another host is powered on to maintain the two host Standby pool

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 31 Manage Workloads Put a host into Maintenance mode The running VMs are automatically migrated and load balanced on other hosts To put the host into maintenance mode, click the Actions button and select the Enter Host Maintenance command

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 32 The VMs running on host 03 are automatically migrated and load balanced on other hosts Additional host is started and put into standby mode to main the pool of two

© 2012 IBM Corporation Platform Computing 33 Protect Workloads Select the Configure button and select the Demo PFA command to create a PFA Click the Alarm icon to see the nature of the error The system will automatically migrate and balance the VMs on other hosts The automatic VM migration is a function of the High Availability policy. If a host crashes or losses power the HA policy will re-parent the VMs onto other hosts
