OUTCOMES  Scholars Will:  Logic: Learn and apply half-step patterns to major scales  Rhetoric: Listen and analyze the score to Ravel’s Bolero.:

SCORE ANALYSIS: RAVEL BOLERO  Highlight the theme  Re-write the two bar rhythmic motive  Observe the different moods portrayed by each unique instrument as it presents the theme.

PIANO POWER  G Major 5 finger pattern and scale.  Five finger pattern:  GABCDCBAG  Scale:  GAB-CDEF#GF#EDC-BAG 

MAJOR SCALE PATTERNS  There are two half steps in any major scale.  They are located between scale degrees 3 and 4, and 7 and 8.

MARKING HALF STEPS  Half-steps are marked with a wedge like this: ^  For example 3^4 indicates a half step between notes 3 and 4.  F#^G is another example.

IDENTIFY HALF STEPS AND SCALE DEGREES  Each scale has eight scale degrees.  The first note of the scale is scale degree i.  Scale degree 1 and 8 are the same letter name.
