Shifter Requirements Safety TrainingSafety Training –CDM training given by Hall Manager (John Govans)given by Hall Manager (John Govans) covers operations in MICE Hallcovers operations in MICE Hall –ISIS introductory safety course Half hour with online test – see Rose Hayes to arrangeHalf hour with online test – see Rose Hayes to arrange On can be done online at office/safety/On can be done online at office/safety/ –RAL site safety course Mondays at 9:30 – see Rose Hayes to set this upMondays at 9:30 – see Rose Hayes to set this up EquipmentEquipment –Personnel protective equipment (PPE): ie. Hardhats, hi-vis vests, and safety boots or shoes –Safety boots are your responsibility – must be 100% non-metallic –Radiation badge –In Hall – you must wear hardhats, vests, rad badge, and boots/shoes

Operations Roles in MICE MOM – Operations ManagerMOM – Operations Manager –Responsible for day-to-day running of experiment –Ensures proper authorizations in place BLOC – On Call BeamLine ExpertBLOC – On Call BeamLine Expert –Responsible for turning ON and setting up Target, Decay Solenoid, beam line magnets and Beam Stop Lead ShifterLead Shifter –Experienced shifter – understands all aspects of running a data-taking shift –Is responsible for MLCR and MICE personnel during operation of experiment when MOM or BLOC not present –Has completed PPS training –Has completed at least 3 shifts ShifterShifter –First role during data-taking TROC – On Call Tracker Expert (when tracker is operational)TROC – On Call Tracker Expert (when tracker is operational) SOC – Software On Call ExpertSOC – Software On Call Expert

Operations Roles in MICE The names of all those in on-call positions will be posted on the wall of the MLCR. The MOM will see that they are kept up-to-date.The names of all those in on-call positions will be posted on the wall of the MLCR. The MOM will see that they are kept up-to-date.

Shifter Responsibilities You are responsible for ensuringYou are responsible for ensuring 1.Safe conduct of and for yourself, those in the MCR and in the Hall during Operational phases 2.Responsible and correct operating of MICE equipment 3.High data quality to fulfill MICE analysis goals

General Shifter Rules Wear protective gear in HallWear protective gear in Hall No lone workingNo lone working –2 people (ex. Magnets, Search, CE) Pay attention to the experimentPay attention to the experiment Do NOT silence Alarm HandlersDo NOT silence Alarm Handlers No external laptops in MLCRNo external laptops in MLCR No work other than shifter workNo work other than shifter work –ie. no writing software, no writing talks No unnecessary personnel in MLCRNo unnecessary personnel in MLCR Wear clothing appropriate for Hall access when you are on shiftWear clothing appropriate for Hall access when you are on shift

Shifter Logistics You will most likely need to spend the night at RAL.You will most likely need to spend the night at RAL. –Rose can help you get a Ridgeway reservation. During the User Run we close the Hall to work.During the User Run we close the Hall to work. Your shift slot should be shown on CHEESE. 8 What you will be operating: MICE PPS (personnel protection system)MICE PPS (personnel protection system) –Controlled Access procedure –Emergency procedures TargetTarget –Stop/start dipping –Change dip depth with BLOC approval –Understand ISIS beam loss display Beamline magnetsBeamline magnets –Turn on/off and set current values –Note: default beam polarity = positive Decay Solenoid – set currentDecay Solenoid – set current Detectors – set HV, turn ON/OFFDetectors – set HV, turn ON/OFF C&M – webcams, environment, target info, DAQ info, etc..C&M – webcams, environment, target info, DAQ info, etc..

What else you will be operating: Alarm HandlersAlarm Handlers –Turn ON/OFF –Identify source of Alarm –Clear problem and acknowledge alarm Run ControlRun Control –Set up – including trigger setting –Stop/start Online MonitoringOnline Monitoring –Set up & operate –Understand plots and use to identify problems with data Online ReconstructionOnline Reconstruction –Set up & operate –Understand plots and use to identify problems with data or success/failure of studies Check that DataMover has moved dataCheck that DataMover has moved data

Shift Records Run Summary SpreadsheetRun Summary Spreadsheet –Latest version taken from MICO page –Updated for each run during data studies –OR for sets of similar runs during DAQ debugging etc. –Provides useful record of running conditions for access later eLog entrieseLog entries –Describe what is happening –Include goals of shift –Beamline settings –Target information –There is overlap between this and spreadsheet but both are necessary –See previous entries for examples –More information is better (ie. Write more not less) –Always write a shift summary at the end of your shift To be retired ASAP

Shifter Support You will be supported in your efforts by the:You will be supported in your efforts by the: –MOM – on call if not in MLCR –BLOC – on call if not in MLCR –TROC – for tracker specific questions –Complete Expert List –Full Operations documentation available at tion tion –Or in the red binder in the MLCR
