ACL Injuries for Male Athletes Kyle Habekorn

Background of the Study Injuries are part of any sport ACL injuries are becoming more frequent The “tear” occurs from changing direction rapidly, slowing down from running, or landing from a jump improperly

Research Questions RQ 1: What precautions can a male athlete take to reduce the risk of an ACL injury? RQ 2: Is neuromuscular electrical stimulation beneficial for a male athlete after an ACL

Mechanics of the Knee

ACL Precautions Warm up, Stretching Strengthening Plyometrics Agility drills Cool down

Survey I believe that a conditioning program could help lower the risk of an ACL injury? Agree Neutral Disagree My University offers an ACL injury prevention program? Agree Neutral Disagree I believe that my athletic trainer is knowledgeable about injuries? Agree Neutral Disagree After completing a training program my ACL is stronger? Agree Neutral Disagree Middle school aged athletes should participate in ACL injury prevention programs? Agree Neutral Disagree I am familiar with Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation and what it provides? Agree Neutral Disagree I believe Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation is beneficial after an ACL injury? Agree Neutral Disagree If I tore my ACL I would utilize the Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation machine? Agree Neutral Disagree If I had a fear of ACL injuries I would take precautionary measures? Agree Neutral Disagree I am comfortable taking care of an ACL injury without a physical therapist? Agree Neutral Disagree

The Results This study found that there are in fact some precautionary steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of an ACL injury The second objective of this study did expose that using neuromuscular electrical stimulation is beneficial for an athlete after an ACL injury

Recommendations I would recommend that colleges and universities take these precautionary steps into consideration for their athletes. I would recommend that kids in middle school start doing the exercises now to reduce their risk when they get older.
