MLA DOCUMENTATION and parenthetical citation

What is MLA?  Modern Language Association  System of standardizing documentation  One of many ways to document (others include APA, Chicago Manual, etc.)

Why Use It?  To validate facts / lend credibility to your argument (via other’s research)  To avoid plagiarism (credit sources)  To provide consistency of format  To allow readers to locate sources for further reading/information

Works Cited  Alphabetical listing of sources cited  MLA format resources– Easy Bib, OWL Purdue, or MLA Handbook  Direct link to parenthetical citations in paper’s text

Nonprint Media – Significant Changes in April 2009  No longer required to cite URL’s  REASONS: –Long/type/transcription errors –Password protected, so useless –Change frequently/session use

When to include a URL  If the professor requires it  the reader cannot locate the source without it

How to include a URL  Break it only at / or // marks  Put it inside <> brackets  Place it after the date of access  Give complete address including http  Place a. after the final >

What needs citing?  Direct Quotes (long quotes, phrases, terms, two or more words in a row that are not your own.)  Facts, data, statistics, images, etc.  Paraphrased information and ideas, concepts, theories, etc.

Parenthetical Documentation Author’s Last Name and Pagination ………” (author’s last name page #). ………” (Smith 17). If no author, use the first part of the works cited entry (which is usually the title) …….” (“Why students...” 96). If no page number, just use author ……” (Jones ). THE GOAL OF PARENTHETICAL CITATION IS TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE SOURCE AND DIRECT THE ACKNOWLEDGE THE SOURCE AND DIRECT THE READER TO THE CORRECT WORKS CITED ENTRY

Equal payment for men and women has been a law since However, even today, it is still not practices in all US work places. This injustice occurs when women are doing the exact same jobs and have the same education as their male counterparts. The WAGE project estimates that the average wage gap, “costs women workers between $700,000 and $2 million annually.” ……….. Women in the US have a difficult time defending their right to equal pay because of a May 2007 Supreme Court Ruling that stipulates women must file a suit within 180 days after the discrimination occurs. Unfortunately, by the time women may suspect such discrimination, it may be too late to file.  Works That Should be Cited “It’s Time for working Women to Earn Equal Pay.” AFL-CIO American Federation of Labor. Web. 3 Feb “The Universal Declaration of Human Rights.” United Nations Web. 5. Feb
