Achieving a Healthy Body Weight

Maintaining a healthy weight  Accepting your body is key.  The human body comes in many different shapes and sizes. This is what makes us unique.  Body shape is passed down through heredity.

What is a healthy weight?  Set-point theory- a body is apt to maintain a particular weight because of its own inner controls  Body-weight classification system- uses 2 methods to assess the health risks BMI Waist circumference

Body Mass Index  Record weight in kg  Measure height in m  Divide weight by height squared BMI= weight in kg height in m² Check chart to find BMI and compare to Health risks classification chart pg 395/396

Waist circumference  Measure waist at natural waistline  Males-waist circumference more than 40” means health risks  Females- circumference more than 35” means health risks

Weight management methods  Weight-management diets  Weight-management centers  Weight-management products

Fad Diets and Other Dangers  Very low-calorie diets  Eating plans based on single food – grapefruit, cabbage  Liquid diets low in calories  Fasting – going without food  Diet pills  Over-the-counter drugs  Plans that promise quick weight loss

Disadvantages  Some methods just don’t work!  Cost  Some plans offer limited food choices  Most that lose weight quickly, regain plus more

Successful Weight Management  Be realistic  Be more active  Change eating habits  Accept body shape
