Childhood Obesity Survey: Thomas Jefferson Middle School, Madison, WI by Suvai Gunasekaran

Survey Objectives ► To gather basic information regarding middle school students to determine if they are healthy. ► Analyze the information to determine obesity index (Body Mass Index) for all students surveyed. ► Compare my survey results with general trends reported based on national surveys.

Students Surveyed 6 th Graders: 75 Students 7 th Graders: 75 Students 8 th Graders: 50 Students

Questions 4 and 5 4. My height is: ____ ft ____ in 5. My weight is: ______ lbs. Using this information, I figured out the BMI’s of all the students surveyed.

BMI Data Analysis ► Less than 10% of students surveyed are overweight. ► Only 2% students surveyed were obese. ► All the average BMI’s are all are in the recommended BMI range. ► Almost 62% of students surveyed have a correct BMI. ► 8 th grade boys have the greatest overall BMI while 6 th grade boys have the least.

Question 6 6. I consider myself as: underweight correct weight overweight I used this information to figure out the opinion of the students surveyed about their body weight (self-image).

Self-image Data Analysis ► In general the students correctly assumed their self-image (body weight). ► For many 6 th grade girls they thought they were a correct weight but they were actually underweight. ► 8th graders had the best self-image of the students surveyed.

Questions 8,9,and On average, I spend about ______ hours per week in sports 9. On average, I spend about ______ hours per week watching TV 10. On average, I spend about ______ hours per week playing computer/video games I used this information to see their physical activity, TV viewing, and computer/video game playing patterns (lifestyle).

Lifestyle Data Analysis ► Of the students surveyed the 6 th graders spend the most time watching TV, playing computer/video games, and playing sports, while the 8 th graders spend the least amount of time doing the activity. ► Most of the students that were surveyed in 8 th grade spend their time watching TV

Final Analysis ► Most of the students surveyed are healthy (weight wise) ► Of the students surveyed, the students were much better compared to national averages.
