STIMULANTS Drugs that speed up the central nervous system. Commonly abused stimulants are Amphetamines and Methamphetmines and cocaine. The nicotine in tabacco and caffeine in coffee, colas, tea and chocolate are also well know as stimulants.

Stimulants cont. Stimulants cause increased heart rate and respiratory rate, high blood pressure, dilated pupils, and decreased appetite. The pyschological effects include moodiness, restlessness, and anxiety. Chronic users can experience hallucintaions and paranoia.

Amphetamines They are stimulants that have an effect similar to that of sympathetic nervous system. Some people use them to stay awake or improve athletic performance. This makes them dangerous as a person will develop a tolerance for them as well as a craving

Amphetamines Psychological dependence can result.

Methamphetamine These are stimulants that have been used medically to treat certain diseases such as Parkinsons and Obesity. Illegal forms of the drug are called crank, speed, or ice. The use of this drug can cause paranoia or even violence.

Depressants A drug that tends to slow down the central nervous system Alcohol, barbiturates, tranquilizers, and methaqualone are forms of depressants. These drugs will relax the muscles, relieve feelings of tension and sleep. They are known to be a dependent drug.

Narcotics Drugs derived from the opium plant that have a sedative effect. Drugs that are used to treat some illness would be found in this category. Morphine and heroin are the two main drugs. Narcotics cause drowsiness and can result in physiological dependence.

Hallucinogens Drugs that are used to alter moods, thoughts, and sense perceptions, including vision, hearing, smell, and touch. Most commonly used is PCP,LSD, mescaline.

Anabolic Steroids Synthetic derivatives of the male hormone testosterone. Helps to build muscle or reduce inflamation Can cause mood swings, aggressive behavior, heart and liver damage, body hair and stroke

Cannabis Derivatives Scientific name for hemp plant. Marijuana and Hemp Both are hallucinogens that has the effects of both a depressant and a stimulant. Can alter your senses, coordination and reaction time, hunger, parnoia, memory. Long term effects damage to immune syst

Inhalants Substances with breathable fumes that are sniffed and inhaled to give a hallucinogenic or mind-altering high. Glue, spray paints, aerosols, lighter fluid, and gasoline are most commonly used. Results can be damaging to the kidneys, liver, bone marrow.
